The Yorkshire and the Humber Infants and Children’s Transport Service (Embrace) is now in operation. This service will take over and enhance the transport and retrieval functions previously performed by the Leeds Retrieval Service. Embrace will take responsibility for finding a bed and, once it is fully operational, arranging transfer of the patient even if the local unit is full.

Children who are critically ill and require intensive care should be referred to Embrace

To refer a patient please ring 0845 147 247 2.

Once you are connected, a call handler will collect some basic clinical and demographic information, involve a member of the Embrace clinical team and put you in contact with the consultant responsible for your local PICU. Further clinical advice will be given and a decision about the necessity for transfer will be made.

A transport team may be despatched at this stage if it is appropriate. The established transport services in Leeds and Sheffield and the new Embrace service will be working together to provide an appropriate team and ambulance.

Other specialists may be involved in the call conference as necessary.

If the local PICU does not have a bed, then Embrace will endeavour to find one for your patient while the transfer process is continuing.

All calls to Embrace are recorded.

We advise that you use the Embrace documentation to structure your initial conversations. It is available both on this website and at www.embrace.sch.nhs.uk.

You are still free to call the Leeds PICU directly on 0113 392 7102 or 0113 392 6795 to discuss patients.
